“For me, watercolor is the only medium which allows me to reproduce the atmospheric effects I visualize in my mind’s eye when staging a painting. My indirect method of painting allows me to fully utilize the fluid nature of this medium by maximizing the ebb and flow of the pigment over the surface of the paper. By throwing, splashing and running pigment across the paper, my color is introduced seamlessly rather than in the textured effect left behind by a brush. I like to think of my method as controlled chaos in which the only controlled phase of the painting is the initial masking of the underlying sketch. From there on, it’s every color droplet for itself.

My goal as an artist is to entice my viewers into a world which I have created through the use of color, movement and atmosphere. It can take days, sometimes weeks or longer, for me to compose a scene which I feel contains the right combination of elements with which to best capture and enhance the essence of the location. I do not copy photographs to create my work. While I will use a photo as reference material, my paintings are based upon sketches made in the field, my memory or pure imagination. This process frees my creativeness and allows me to follow the creative process wherever it leads me. I want my paintings to be painterly and not photographic. As far as I am concerned, if a photograph is that good, frame it and put it on the wall.”

My class will teach the various advanced watercolor techniques which I use in my landscape paintings and will emphasize the elements of composition and design that will enable the students to create their own award-winning paintings. I will spend the first part of the class demonstrating various techniques such as how to create mood, enhance the effects of sunlight, throw realistic vegetation, create reflections in water, paint landscapes in fog, as well as other indirect painting techniques. I intend to stress the principals of composition and design while calling upon the students to use their own imaginations versus photographs when setting up their paintings. The goal of the class is to provide the student with more than enough information so that they will be able to design and create their own art work without having to copy photographs. My intent is to show them the door to the endless possibilities of watercolors.

Students attending this class should have some experience in drawing and should be familiar with watercolor, but not necessarily experienced painters. Email instructor at Lisamg14@optonline.net for a supply list.
