“The medium of watercolors never ceases to excite me. Because of its flexibility, I enjoy exploring its ability to convey soft edged mystic moods as well as its hard-edged precise representations. I like the challenge of having the physical properties of the pigments mixing with water, gravity, and humidity while trying to keep the painting under control in what can be a semi-controlled environment. Add to that being spontaneous while at the same time planning ahead in order to leave the white paper areas clear and it seems painting in transparent watercolor is a big juggling job……but, what fun!”
Ms. Brandenburg majored in art in college, and worked in all mediums for years but didn’t begin to focus exclusively in watercolor until the late ‘70s. Taking numerous workshops around the country she has honed her skill to find her own voice using the watercolor medium.
She is a prize winning full exhibiting member of the Guild of Creative Art in Shrewsbury New Jersey, American Artists Professional League New Jersey Chapter, the Garden State Watercolor Society and the New Jersey Watercolor Society. She has taught watercolor classes at the Guild of Creative Art since 1985. She is in corporate and private collection in California, Virginia, Illinois, Massachusetts, North Carolina, Missouri, New Jersey and New York and has been in juried shows around the country including Lincoln Center in New York.
She received the Dorothy and Charles Plohn award at the October 25, 2005 Garden State Watercolor Society Juried Exhibition and the President’s award in 2006.
Using different papers to achieve different effects, she often uses a Japanese rice paper to gain textures and wrinkles, or illustration board or Yupo for unexpected edges.
